CASE STUDY - McMurray Cottage

Aileen Overend is one of our Finance Business Partners and is based in Helensburgh.

Her world was rocked on Hogmanay 2020 when her husband, Andy, was diagnosed with a brain tumour.

What followed was gruelling, with Andy undergoing successful surgery in the Spring of 2021 followed by six weeks of daily radiotherapy before a longer course of chemotherapy treatment.

The couple had the added challenge of ensuring Andy remained safe from COVID-19 and shielded for three months, with their two youngest children being kept off school during that period.

During a break between Andy's radiotherapy ending and chemotherapy beginning, Aileen reached out to the FST to see if they could enjoy a respite stay at the charity's cottage in Portpatrick.

Thankfully, last summer, the family were able to enjoy a stay at McMurray Cottage.

The visit gave the family a new lease of life at a time when they were beginning to toil.

Aileen shared: "McMurray Cottage is ideal respite accommodation and is beautifully renovated with superb facilities.

The weather was perfect and Portpatrick is a beautiful and welcoming village community.

"The Family Support Trust should be applauded for having the foresight to add a local respite accommodation to their portfolio within this perfect location.”

Working within the new Scottish Fire and Rescue Service landscape, our Charity has expanded its service delivery area and our grant assistance programme is open to all serving personnel and their dependents in the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

Wholetime, Retained, Volunteer and Support staff are eligible to apply for FST’s assistance.

We continue to provide our services to our registered Beneficiaries and Retired employees of Strathclyde Fire and Rescue and the predecessor Fire Organisations.
